Powder coating or plastisol

Every roller shutter door we manufacture leaves our Sunderland factory finished in one of two ways: powder coating or plastisol. Both are durable, both protect the metal, and both are available in a range of colours. The right choice depends on your application and the colour you want.

Which finish is right for your door?

Both finishes are manufactured and applied at our Sunderland factory, so whichever you choose, your door ships with the same build quality and the same warranty.

  • Anthracite grey insulated roller garage door fitted to a modern detached home

    Powder coating

£28 per square metre (ex VAT)

Powder coating is an electrostatic process. Dry paint powder is applied to the metal surface then baked in an oven at high temperature. The result is a hard, smooth finish that bonds directly to the metal.

It's the more durable of the two options. Powder coating resists chipping, fading, and corrosion well, and handles impact better than plastisol in most conditions. It's also the better choice if you want a specific RAL colour — the range available is far wider than plastisol

  • Large galvanised steel commercial roller shutter on an industrial unit

    Plastisol

£15 per square metre (ex VAT)

Plastisol is a PVC-based coating applied as a liquid and heat-cured to form a flexible, textured finish. It's been the standard finish on roller shutter doors for decades and remains a reliable, cost-effective option.

The finish is slightly textured rather than smooth. It's available in a defined range of Masterline colours rather than the full RAL range. Within that range it performs well and the colour holds over time.

Which should you choose?

For most domestic garage doors, plastisol is the practical choice. The standard colours cover white, black, anthracite, and brown, and the price difference is meaningful across a full door.

Choose powder coating if you need a specific RAL colour outside the plastisol range, want a smoother finish, or need maximum long-term durability. It's the standard choice for commercial shutters on customer-facing or exposed elevations.
